Hello, Neighbors Network Friends
May is a favorite month for many in Central Florida, known for its pleasant temperatures, the beautiful bounty of Spring, and a bit less traffic as the snow birds head back north.
What’s New
Winter Park Chain of Lakes Boat Tour

It was a gorgeous day to be out on the lakes for the Winter Park Chain of Lakes boat tour. Members enjoyed the experience, the sunshine, the breeze and, of course, the skipper’s comments about local history. “We sat in the front seat, which became the splash zone when the wind kicked up and the boat was turning. But, we were dry by the time we got back to the dock. It was a great ride,” a Member said.
Another Member said she enjoyed the beautiful ride. “It was easy to get on the boat, and what made it extra special was a very nice anonymous donor paid for our tickets. What a treat!”
Upcoming
Neighbors Network Board Member Laura Capp, a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, will present valuable information about home modifications that can help members stay in their home longer and more safely. This presentation will draw on research done by AARP. It will be held at the Winter Park Public Library on May 22.
Spotlight on Members

Ten years ago, Harold noticed things becoming darker, as if he were in a darkened room. He saw an optometrist but couldn’t read the eye chart like he used to. Testing at ophthalmologists and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami resulted in a diagnosis of optic nerve damage, no known cause. He is legally blind.
His sister, wanting to help connect with a stable source for rides and other types of support, found Neighbors Network through an online search. He became a member in 2019. Getting rides to the grocery store or a medical appointment became much easier. As many of our members have found, the rides are about more than just getting from point A to point B. They are like mini-visits where the Volunteer and Member build meaningful connections. In Harold’s case, he has found a shared love of music. Whether it is during a ride, or a volunteer assembling a desk chair or changing light bulbs in his ceiling, the connections he has made have enhanced his life.
“What I like about being a member are the resources offered, like transportation, and meeting people with similar interests and passions to talk to. Perhaps, what I appreciate most is the friendships I’ve developed with many of the volunteers and the sense that there is a group of people who care and are kind enough to help out,” he said. We are delighted to help Harold continue to maintain his independence and live confidently in the home he loves.
