I really think that Neighbors Network was an “idea just waiting to happen” in our community. At a national aging conference in 2010 that featured so many aspects of aging, I was most struck by a presentation by the leaders and members of Beacon Hill Village in Boston. The speakers were my age range (65-75), and I was struck by their clear and compelling message… we CAN age independently in our homes and neighborhoods through a membership-driven community model. I knew that was exactly how I wanted to live, and as I talked with my health-care colleagues, friends and community leaders, I found that I definitely wasn’t alone.

I came home from that conference and started gathering folks together in conversations about this “village” concept. In a large gathering, with an experienced and fun facilitator,  we talked about everything: the how, why, where, when and who! And even the why not! We visited other village models and invited their leadership to interact with our planning team. With encouragement, we approached the Winter Park Health Foundation and received a three-year grant to develop the model for Neighbors Network under the fiscal umbrella of the Senior Resource Alliance, our local Area Agency on Aging. Then, in 2016, with three years of practical and challenging experience, Neighbors Network, Inc. received its 501(c)(3) designation as an independent, non-profit organization.

Happy Tenth Anniversary! Now, at 84, I am a Member myself along with my husband, Jerry. I feel more confident and connected as I age. I am committed to enjoying my life in the Village of Neighbors Network and helping whenever I can!
