Member Stories
Every day, Neighbors Network volunteers help members stay independent, connected, and in the homes they love. Here are a few of their stories.
A Car Becomes a Gift
When Marge, who is in her 90s, decided it was time to sell the car that had been sitting in her driveway since she stopped driving, she wasn’t sure where to start. Her family didn’t have time to handle it, so a Neighbors Network volunteer offered to help.
The volunteer gathered the details, got an online offer from Carvana, and saw the sale through, even staying with Marge at her home on pickup day to answer her questions about the paperwork. When the car was gone and the check was in her hand, Marge signed it over to Neighbors Network as a thank-you for all the rides she had received. Her gift started a fund that helps other members with transportation needs.
A Refrigerator Rescue
Bill, who is in his 90s, was in a panic. It was early July, his refrigerator had stopped working, and he couldn’t get the help he needed ordering a new one by phone. So he called his Neighbors Network contact, and she sprang into action.
She learned what he wanted, searched online, and visited several stores (refrigerators were hard to find during the pandemic) until she found the smaller size he needed at Home Depot. But weekend delivery would have cost a third of the price of the refrigerator, more than Bill could afford. So she called another volunteer to ask who had a pickup truck. The next morning, that volunteer’s son and grandson picked up the new refrigerator, delivered it to Bill’s condo, and hauled away the old one. Bill was thrilled.
A Saturday Yard Makeover
Dell’s front yard had turned into a jungle. She didn’t have the strength to clear it herself or the budget to hire help, so she asked Neighbors Network. A group of volunteers met at her home one Saturday morning and, in just four hours, transformed the yard. Dell was relieved, delighted, and deeply grateful.
Staying Home, Staying Independent
On the way to a doctor’s appointment, Doris, who is in her 90s, told her volunteer driver that she wouldn’t still be living in her own home without Neighbors Network. Her adult children live out of town, and she’s glad she can stay independent without relying on them.
Volunteers drive her to appointments and the grocery store, pick up and return her library books, and fix things around the house. She says the volunteers are kind and eager to help, and that she never would have met such nice people if she hadn’t joined.
Help With the Mail
One member’s vision is fading, which makes it hard to read his mail and tell what’s important from what’s junk. Volunteers read it to him so he can decide what to keep and what to toss. It’s a small task that makes a big difference, and he’s grateful for it.
A Tech Lifeline
Another member relies on his iPad for nearly everything, but the small print is hard for him to see, and he can’t always hear or understand customer service reps on the phone. A volunteer joins him on three-way calls with Apple Support and explains the problem clearly so it gets solved. He calls it a lifesaver.
Rides, Rides, Rides
For members who can no longer drive, a ride means everything. Volunteers take members to medical appointments, the grocery store and pharmacy, hair and nail appointments, lunch, the gym, group gatherings, and visits with friends. Most rides are within 5 to 10 miles of the member’s home and take about two hours.
Members and volunteers enjoy getting to know one another, and the volunteers love how good it feels to help. One member has even been taking weekly ukulele lessons at the library!
Music, Shared
After her husband, a professional musician, passed away, one member was left with stacks of his sheet music and asked if someone could help her sort through it. Luckily, a volunteer with 50 years of music experience was glad to step in. He can read the music, and sometimes the two of them hum through it together. For her, it has been a tremendous relief and a joy. For him, it’s a wonderful way to put his musical background to good use.
Handy Helpers
Many of our members are widows still living in the homes they shared with their husbands for years, and those homes often need small repairs. A few of our handy volunteers have made a real difference by fixing what they can and charging members only for the parts.
