Hello Neighbors Network Friends,
September is Healthy Aging Month. Healthy aging is about more than managing medical conditions – it’s about maintaining a sense of wellbeing in mind, body and spirit. That means nourishing our bodies with balanced nutrition, staying active through regular movement, keeping our minds sharp by learning new skills, staying socially connected, and finding joy in everyday life. Neighbors Network understands the importance of healthy aging, and in this newsletter you’ll see a few examples of how we help Members do that!
What’s New
It was quite an experience for Members to travel virtually to other parts of the world, thanks to the tech team at the Winter Park Library, who were patient and thorough as they set up the headsets. Members traveled to places they’d never been, including inside the international space station. The daughter of a 92-year-old Member wrote, “Never would I have imagined my mom using a virtual reality headset. She had a blast and wants to do it again!”
Some Members have already met Susan Omoto (first on right) when she attended Coffee & Donuts at Lake Lily and Creative Spirits at Veronica’s. Susan is Neighbors Network’s new Executive Director, a part-time position made possible by a grant from the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. We are happy to have Susan join our team in this capacity and look forward to helping her spread the word about Neighbors Network. Watch for more about Susan and her role in next month’s newsletter.
Upcoming
Every third Thursday of the month, there’s a lively discussion about books – all kinds of books – at Share-a-Title Book Club. Led by Annette Kelly, an avid, lifelong reader and founder of Neighbors Network, the discussion centers on attendees’ thoughts about what they’ve read or are reading, instead of an assigned bookclub title. It’s always a fascinating conversation. Often, there are giveaway books, too. You’re welcome to attend, it’s open to the public. No sign up needed, just come ready to talk, listen, and enjoy! From 11 am – 12:30 pm at the College Park Neighborhood Center, 2393 Elizabeth Avenue, Orlando 32804. Snacks are provided, free.
Spotlight on Donors
Emmy has donated to Neighbors Network for a few years because she’s impressed with what we do for Members. She let us know how she felt when she wrote, “We all see so much need – globally, nationally, locally – it’s difficult to figure out where to give. We do our research, pick our causes, and donate. And hope we really are helping. The flip side of global is local, and that’s when we actually know and see that we are helping. It is so satisfying! Neighbors Network does it every day in so many ways.”
